Totally Over you Evaluation
Storyline
Totally over you Is about a 1 group of girls in love and going out with another group of boys who are all friends. The girls one day think that having a boyfriend would interfere with them becoming famous so they decide to dump them. The group of boys are angry and one of the younger boys gives them an idea to pretend to be pop stars and they will come running back to them but the boys won’t make it easy for them. So they get a pretend agent and manager. Then the girls hear from a homeless boy who is really the little friend that he can tell the future and he see’s their ex boyfriends will become pop stars, they can’t believe.
The first ‘pretend’ concert they have they write a song called totally over you describing the girls who are there watching waiting for the show to finish so they can to talk to them. The girls are hurt by the lyrics and after the show the boys tell them that they want nothing to do with them and that they are over them.
The girls beg them an at the end the boys forgive them but when they tell the girls it was a joke, they are shocked and very upset but later they understand that it was all their fault and it was a lesson learnt. In the end they all get back together.
Evaluation
As a whole the musical the school performed was really good, as the story line was very well written as it was something students could relate to, the language and scenarios used were school based, and the problems that came across were everyday problems like young love relationships, relationships between friends and having dreams and aspirations. Even though their storyline was really good it was quite basic and predictable.
The costumes used were really good and realistic, especially the set design, they used the same set design throughout the whole play which was consistent and since the stage was used for the main songs and when the band were playing it showed the audience its main purpose was to show that the boys were playing on a mains stage and that it was a scene change, however it would have been better if they created more set designs just to make it more clear and more engaging for the audience.
They used several props on stage which really added to their characters as it helped the audience understand each character individually.
I was sat to one side of the performance so I could hear a lot of chattering and movement of equipment, to minimise as much noise they should have had props ready on the nearest side instead of taking things across or backstage to the other side.
At times it was quite hard to hear some characters, as their voices were really quiet compared to the characters with head mikes. They used the curtains to their advantage, which was good for the audience as it made us wonder what was going to happen next it also made it clearer when there was going to be a scene change.
The way they broke into the songs was brilliant, as it went really well with the scene beforehand as the characters wanted to express their feelings, especially the enthusiasm they put in it, however I think they should have done more dance numbers as a whole cast as its one of the main conventions of a musical, their last song they did sing together but there wasn’t much movement between themselves and every amazing musical needs to end with a big dance and singing number.

War Horse

Storyline
The play Warhorse is about a poor family, a husband and wife and a son, who live on a ranch. One night the father is out with his son and father is drunk around the corner they see an auction where there are selling a baby horse and he sees his enemy (his brother) and they both begin to compete for that horse. Purposely his brother lets him win because he knows he would waste his money as he is drunk and he buys the horse with the money he was meant to send to pay the mortgage.
They leave the boy in charge of the horse and he names him Joey. The boy becomes incredibly attached to horse and the other way round they do everything together. After many problems that slowly get solved in the play half way through the play the dad sells the horse to the army for the war without telling the boy, once the boy finds out it’s too late to buy him back but the general promises that he would look after Joey.
Weeks later a letter is sent to the boy, and family that the general is dead and everyone else believes Joey is too, but the boy knows he’s alive. One night he escapes to join the war and find him. At the end both horse and man are reunited for a beautiful ending.
The Evaluation
The most amazing thing about war horse that will stay with me and I think everyone in the audience is the wooden horses, the detail, and realistic sizes were incredible, especially how the actors manipulated the wooden horses to make them come to life.
The storyline at first sounded a bit tedious but from the minute the play began it was so amazing to see how the main character bonded with Joey (horse), their acting was so realistic and made the audience feel their connection. They should have added more humour because the plot overall was quite serious and sad so by maybe adding elements of humour at the beginning would have made the play better.
The sound effects used to create the thunder and the sound of bombs, alarms and sirens through the scene where there is a war was really effective as it engaged the reader and allowed us to feel like we were actually there, especially when there were gun shots
The scene changes were clear, even though at times to get all the props on stage and the horses did take time but as they were in character throughout it, it wasn’t that noticeable and just look like part of the play.
The drama techniques used like when the whole cast on stage would freeze and there would be a crosscut, they stayed in their positions for quite some time yet they still held their position.
However the play did go on for quite a while, and it became quite complicated which maybe had you at times getting distracted but the sound effects definitely kept the audience hooked throughout.
